Hurricane Preparation Guide

The City of Tampa is known for its beautiful waterways, from the Hillsborough River to Bayshore Boulevard. But unfortunately, the proximity of that water could be a major problem if we ever get hit by a major storm. Each year, from June 1st through November 30th, an average of six hurricanes form in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea combined. Hurricanes are one of nature's most powerful forces that turn warm ocean water into powerful winds capable of mass destruction. Heavy rain also accompanies hurricanes and is not a threat only to coastal areas, but to areas hundreds of miles inland as well. In some cases, flooding occurs days after the storm actually goes ashore. Storm surge and tidal influence are two key elements in low lying flood plain areas, for which no solution is available other than allowing the tides to recede.

You can take an active role in protecting your property from flood damage. The method you choose depends on your particular situation. Sandbagging alone is not an effective method for protecting a structure from flooding. You must caulk to keep water out. Expanding foam and duct tape are more effective than sandbags but can damage finishes.
