Blueways - Kayak and Canoe Trails

Blueways are water paddling trails for canoes and kayaks on the riversColorful kayaks at the beach at Cypress Point Park, bays and estuaries of our city. The creation of a recognized water trail system will promote a healthy, non-polluting, family-friendly form of outdoor recreation. Canoeing and kayaking are popular water recreation activities along greenways. Canoeing and kayaking have increased exponentially since the late 1970s. With water recreation an important industry in the Tampa Bay area, the availability of "Blueway" trails has the potential to contribute significantly to our local economy.

Many areas encountered along blueway trails contain unique ecological, geological or historical features, providing excellent educational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Recreational paddling also offers individuals the chance to relive the experiences of Native Americans and early explorers and appreciate their place in history. Canoeing and kayaking have grown in popularity, increasing the market demand for water trails. Paddling a stream, river or bay encourages good stewardship practices. Communities within the region will benefit from increased volunteerism for clean-ups, habitat restoration and improved water quality.
