Investing in the Basics
Road resurfacing, sidewalks, signage, traffic calming, road improvements - these are the basics of a neighborhood. We believe that each year more of your tax money should go to improving your quality of life.
Since her first days in office, investing in neighborhood basics has been a priority of Mayor Iorio's administration. With the support of Tampa City Council, the amount for basic street improvements in neighborhoods has more than doubled since fiscal year 2003. This year we are investing nearly $5.5 million to improve neighborhood streets, a 12% increase over last year. This year, particular emphasis has been given to increasing funds for street resurfacing. Bringing all of our streets up to acceptable standards is our goal.

What are the basics of good neighborhood streets?
Road Resurfacing
Our program this year will repave approximately 36 miles of roadway.
Street Signage
Our signage program includes street name signs, illuminated signs, traffic signs and marking installations. This year we expect to replace 8,000 signs throughout our city and four intersections will receive illuminated signs.
Sidewalks
Our sidewalk program will install and repair nearly 9 miles of sidewalk this year to help ensure pedestrian safety and contribute to our sense of community.
Traffic Calming
Traffic calming devices help promote and maintain the safety and livability of our residential streets. This year more than eight projects are planned throughout Tampa's neighborhoods.
Neighborhood Roadway Improvements
Sometimes we take a street and combine several of the above improvements at one time. We call this a neighborhood roadway improvement. An example of this type of project being funded this fiscal year is Lake Avenue, where new sidewalks, landscaping and crosswalks will improve this road from 22nd Street to 29th Street.
